गंगाजी में धोया पाप कहाँ – कहाँ तक जाता है...?
एक बार किसी गाँव में एक महात्मा सत्संग कर रहे थे, तभी कहीं से एक चोर आकर सत्संग में बैठ गया। महात्मा के सत्संग का इतना प्रभाव हुआ कि चोर को अपने पाप कर्मों से घृणा होने लगी। सत्संग समाप्त होने के बाद चोर महात्मा के पास गया और अपने पापों के प्रायश्चित का उपाय पूछने लगा।
महात्माजी ने बोल दिया – “ गंगा स्नान कर आओ, तुम्हारे पाप धुल जायेंगे।”
वह चोर तो गंगा स्नान के लिए चला गया लेकिन तभी वहाँ बैठे लोगों में से एक युवक खड़ा हुआ और बोला – “ महात्माजी ! आप कहते है कि गंगा स्नान से पाप धुल जाते है तो इसका मतलब ये हुआ कि पाप गंगाजी में समा गये, मतलब गंगाजी भी पापी हो गई।”
युवक की बात का महात्माजी के पास कोई जवाब नहीं था । क्योंकि उन्होंने कभी इस बारे में सोचा ही नहीं कि गंगाजी से पाप कहाँ जाते है ? आखिरकार इस अनूठे प्रश्न का उत्तर जानने के लिए महात्माजी तपस्या करने लगे।
कई दिनों की तपस्या के बाद महात्माजी पर देवता प्रसन्न होकर प्रकट हो गये और वरदान मांगने को कहा। महात्माजी ने कहा – “ भगवन ! मुझे अपने एक प्रश्न का उत्तर चाहिए कि गंगा में धोया गया पाप कहाँ जाता है ?”
देवता अपने में मग्न, उन्हें भी पता नहीं कि गंगा में धोया पाप कहाँ जाता है ! अतः देवता बोले – “ चलो ! गंगाजी से ही पूछ लेते है और दोनों गंगाजी के पास पहुँचे। महात्माजी ने गंगाजी से प्रश्न किया – “ हे शीतल और परम पवित्र जल की अधिपति माँ गंगे ! कृपा करके हमें बताओं कि अनगिनत लोग आपमें जो पाप धोते है, उनसें क्या आप भी पापी होती हो ?”
गंगाजी ने प्रसन्नता से कहा – “ भला मैं क्यों पापी हुई, मैं तो अपना सारा जल पापों सहित समुन्द्र को समर्पित कर देती हूँ । उसके बाद उन पापों का समुन्द्र देवता क्या करते है ? ये उन्हीं से पूछों ।
देवता महात्मा को लेकर समुन्द्र के पास गये और बोले – “ हे जलसिंधू ! माँ गंगे अपने सम्पूर्ण जल के साथ जो पाप आपको अर्पित देती है । उनसे क्या आप पापी होते है ?”
सागर ने कहा – “ मैं तो अपना सम्पूर्ण जल सूर्य के ताप से भाप बनाकर बादलों में परिवर्तित कर देता हूँ । इसलिए भला मैं क्यों पापी हुआ ?”
अब देवता महात्माजी को बादलों के पास ले गये और महात्माजी ने बादलों के सामने भी अपना प्रश्न दोहराया – “ हे मेघा ! समुन्द्र जो पापों सहित जल को भाप बनाकर बादलों में परिवर्तित कर देते है । तो क्या उन पापों से बादल पापी होते है ?”
बादल बोले – “ भाई ! हम क्यों पापी हुए, हम तो सारा जल यथा ऋतू पृथ्वी पर भेज देते है । ये प्रश्न पृथ्वी से करो कि वह पापों का क्या करती है ?”
अब देवता महात्माजी को पृथ्वी के पास ले गये और बोले – “ हे जगत को धारण करने वाली माँ धरती, बादल जल की बूंदों के साथ पापों की जो वर्षा करते है, वो पाप आपमें समा जाते है । तो क्या उनसे आप पापी होती है ?”
पृथ्वी बोली – “ मैं क्यों पापी हुई ! मैं उन पापों को मिट्टी के माध्यम से अन्न में भेज देती हूँ । अब ये बात तो आप अन्न से पूछो कि वो उन पापों का क्या करता है ?”
अब दोनों अन्न देवता के पास गये और बोले – “ हे अन्न देवता ! पृथ्वी सारे पाप आपको भेजती है, तो क्या आप पापी हुए ?”
अन्न देवता बोले – “ मैं क्यों पापी हुआ ? जो मनुष्य मुझे जिस मनःस्थिति और वृति से उगाता है या प्राप्त करता है । जिस मनःस्थिति और वृति से बनाया और खिलाया जाता है । उसी मनःस्थिति और वृति के अनुरूप मैं पापों को उन मनुष्यों तक पहुँचा देता हूँ । जिसे खाकर उन मनुष्यों की बुद्धि भी वैसी ही पापी हो जाती है जो उनसे उनके कर्मों का फल देने वाले कार्य करवाती है ।”
शायद इसीलिए कहा गया है – “ जैसा खाय अन्न, वैसा होय मन ”
यह कहानी कितनी सच है ये महत्वपूर्ण नहीं, बल्कि इससे एक बड़े महत्वपूर्ण सत्य को उद्घाटित किया गया है । पाप कर्मों को गंगाजी में धोने का मतलब है मन को पाप कर्मों से मुक्त करना । यदि मन में पाप और अपवित्रता है तो गंगाजी में धोया पाप अन्न के माध्यम से फिर से हमें ही मिलने वाला है । क्योंकि अन्न को जिस वृति से कमाया और बनाया जाता है, उससे वैसे ही संस्कार बनते है ।

Where does the sin washed in Gangaji go to where...?
Once a Mahatma was doing a satsang in a village, when a thief came from somewhere and sat in the satsang. The satsang of the Mahatma had such an effect that the thief started hating his sinful deeds. After the satsang was over, the thief went to the Mahatma and started asking for a way to atone for his sins.
Mahatmaji said - "Come after bathing in the Ganges, your sins will be washed away."
The thief went for a bath in the Ganges, but then one of the people sitting there stood up and said - "Mahatmaji! You say that by bathing in the Ganges, sins are washed away, it means that the sins got absorbed in Gangaji, that means Gangaji also became a sinner.
Mahatmaji had no answer to the young man's words. Because they never thought about where the sins go from Gangaji? Finally, to know the answer to this unique question, Mahatmaji started doing penance.
After several days of penance, the gods appeared pleased on Mahatmaji and asked him to ask for a boon. Mahatmaji said - "God! I want an answer to my one question that where does the sin washed in the Ganges go?
The gods are engrossed in themselves, they do not even know where the sin washed in the Ganges goes! So the deity said - "Come on! They ask Gangaji only and both of them reach Gangaji.
Mahatma asked Gangaji - "O Mother Gange, the lord of the soft and most holy water! Please tell us, do you also become a sinner from the sins that countless people wash away in you?
Gangaji happily said - "Why have I sinned, I surrender all my water with my sins to the sea. What does the ocean god of those sins do after that? Ask them this.
The deities went to the sea with the Mahatma and said - "O Jalsindhu! The sin that Maa Gange gives you with all her water. Are you a sinner from them?"
Sagar said – “I convert all my water into clouds by making steam from the heat of the sun. So why did I become a sinner?"
Now the deities took Mahatmaji to the clouds and Mahatmaji repeated his question in front of the clouds as well – “O Megha! The sea which converts the water with sins into steam by making it into clouds. So do those sins make clouds sinners?"
Badal said - "Brother! Why did we become sinners, we send all the water on the earth as it is the season. Ask this question to the earth, what does it do with its sins?
Now the deities took Mahatmaji to the earth and said - "O Mother Earth, who holds the world, the clouds that rain down sins along with the drops of water, those sins get absorbed in you. So do you make them a sinner?"
Prithvi said - "Why did I become a sinner! I send those sins through the soil to the food. Now ask this thing from the grain, what does it do with those sins?
Now both went to the food deity and said - "O food god! The earth sends all the sins to you, so have you been a sinner?"
The food god said - "Why did I become a sinner? The person with which the state of mind and attitude makes me grow or get it. The state of mind and attitude with which it is made and fed. According to the same state of mind and attitude, I pass on the sins to those human beings. Eating which the intellects of those human beings also become sinners in the same way, which makes them do the work which gives the fruits of their actions.
Perhaps that is why it has been said – “As you eat food, so be your mind”.
It is not important how true this story is, but a very important truth has been revealed from it. To wash the sinful deeds in the Ganges means to free the mind from sinful activities. If there is sin and impurity in the mind, then the sin washed in Gangaji is going to be found by us again through food. Because the attitude by which food is earned and made, so are the sanskars.
